Re: All Media On-Going Sketching Thread Part 5

Thank you, Michael. And you're welcome.

Here are a couple of things I sketched quickly this afternoon all on Michael's house brand watercolor paper at 90 lbs.

This one is based on some old Dutch sketch in the 1600's.

Conte Bistre, Sanguine, with a background wash of watercolor.

My wandering lovebirds. I did a background wash with Yarka professional watercolor but not sure how not to get streaks with a brush. The sketch was based on a couple of figures from the Atlas of Foreshortening but I improvised the two. Derwent Drawing Pencil.

I put it in photoshop and gave it a fresco filter and different color. I like this much better.

Here is some non-descript drawing while waiting for my kids at school.

Odd looking creatures you have lurking around there

Sandra, you try all sorts of materials. Do you know bamboo paper?

Michael, no, I don't know about bamboo paper. But I looked it up just now and it seems not to be environmentally friendly.

Is it of some special texture that I should be aware of that makes great drawings?

Hemp and Kenaf seems quite environment friendly. Have you tried those yet? I have only bought recycled paper so far from Strathmore and Bee company. I like rough textures but I'm too am into colored toned backgrounds and the only way I could do it is using hot press watercolor paper and tone it myself if I don't want to always spend lots on Canson toned pads.

Re: All Media On-Going Sketching Thread Part 5

This is my attempt to copy Paul Cadmus style and realized it is actually very difficult. He used a lot of contour lines, a lot.

I used Strathmore Gray Scale Paper 9x12 inch 80 lbs which has texture like the Canson Mi-Teintes paper and give it that feel of many lines. Also learning more about my Derwent Drawing Pencils. It's a workable pencil that could be erased and not flaky. For detailed work like this, I guess it would be easier than conte hard pastel or pastel pencils.

The figure is from Atlas of Foreshortening book but colors are my choice. I gave him hair like one of my lovebirds. The book has only a bald headed man.

Re: All Media On-Going Sketching Thread Part 5

Hey, Sandra. They mentioned forshortening on the Figure section of WC. I am still trying to figure figure out all the terms.
Good sketch and it looks nice on the gray paper. I also liked the cartoons.
I will post my sketch later for my participation, but I just thought I would share this link. You might have seen it. It was in the figure drawing workshop threads.

Not only good for practice, but good for references too.
Michaeleric, nice to see your work again. Good as usual.
I finally have started to go to life drawing workshops. Next on the first or second week in December. There are lots more here in Portland, but it's close and very professional.
Terry, very funny as usual!

Re: All Media On-Going Sketching Thread Part 5

Hi, all.
I am just adding a smallish sketch that I did yesterday. Looking at it on the computer I guess I will add a little to the right shoulder.
It is going into a letter to my mother for her birthday. I thought it would be nicer than a card.

Sandra, there is a lot of expression in that piece. I haven't used bamboo paper. I was just trying to find out what it's like. My local art shop has started stocking it but it is very expensive and only sold in pads of 30 sheets. A lot of money to spend if one doesn't like it afterwards.

Jake a classical looking piece. Is that your mum?

Thanks, Michaeleric. It's actually a great granny. From an old faded photo. I like to draw borders and thought the flowers would look cool.

Re: All Media On-Going Sketching Thread Part 5

Thanks for the link, Jake. I've used that site before. Really very nice action figures. It gives great inspirations especially for our cartoons!!

You have a very classic look to that piece. Your mother would definitely enjoy it.

I wish I have a lot of friends to send my work to but sadly, I don't. But my mom did see my Chinese landscapes pieces and she was very surprised that I could paint like that now.

Michael, I'm think with your skills, even if you draw on toilet paper, they'll come out a million bucks. I think we should wait for reviews of those who are eager to plonk that money down. Robert, have you tried it yet?

Thanks for comments on my figure piece. I was very happy with that piece too.

Here is one of my love birds. It started off being a Col-Erase color pencils on Japanese craft paper but the color is so light I reached for my cheap box of Lowell Cornell tiny soft pastel sticks of 12. Because the paper is so smooth, I had to blend with my finger. At this moment, I thought colourfix paper would be nice but then, in the end, it's not bad for some cheap materials.
