I like the second (portrait) one. It highlights the waterfall's direction straight into your subject flowers. Quite naturally.

The second one. The portrait format complements the shape of the waterfall.

Re: Which one do you like?

Thank you both! This is a commission piece. I came up with the portrait layout first and submitted it to the client. They came back requesting it be a landscape painting. I like the portrait better also. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't a underlying ego thing on my part. So now I will just paint them both! Portrait for ME and the landscape for the client.

My choice would be a combination of the two. with an emphasis on the flowers.

Re: Which one do you like?

Hi Douglas,
Interesting thought. Would it be a portrait or a landscape layout?

The landscape makes a better composition, it is well balanced with the waterfall as the focal point. The portrait is also good but the waterfall and the Bird of Paradise are fighting for attention.
