Re: Oil Paint -- Chalky Skintones

Art -- I'd recommend Blockx Gold Ochre over either the WN or OH versions.

Another wonderful color is Michael Harding's Yellow Ochre Deep.

Here is a sheet showing comparison between natural and synthetic YO in various mixes:

If you notice, the OH YO Light and the Mussini Attish Light Ochre look basically identical, leading me to believe that Mussini accidentally labeled this paint as synthetic ochre, but instead it is natural. Also note the difference in tinting strength between the natural and synthetic versions.

The next sheet shows various Blockx earth colors, including the Gold Ochre. I think you will see why I am recommending it. (The Naples Yellow is not genuine, but a mix of synthetic iron oxide, yellow and white).

Finally, this one shows the Blockx Gold Ochre next to the Harding Yellow Ochre Deep. (L to R): OH Naples Yellow Deep Extra (PBr24), Harding Naples Yellow (imitation -- PBr24), Blockx YO and Harding YO (both synthetic), Harding Yellow Ochre Deep, Blockx Gold Ochre and Blockx Brown Ochre.

Re: Oil Paint -- Chalky Skintones

Thanks for all the help Jim…..You’re color charts are invaluable.

On you’re color chart….in the Syn. YO….PY42 column
When I go down to the Blockx YO and look at the swatch you posted
(sheet one )It’s a totally different color than the Blockx YO that I have.

My BYO….appears much closer to your BYO mixed with FUB
As it comes out of the tube it looks like Olive Green…very strange.

On your second sheet of Blockx colors the BYO looks much closer to what I have.

I have 150ml of Blockx BS deep…my color charts agree exactly with yours.

That B.Gold Ochre looks very, very nice…I will get it and try it.
Thank you for that.

Many years ago I placed a large paint order with this company
Alpha….sierra….whiskey. I ordered a 150ml tube of Rem Ultramarine blue.
What I got was a 150 ml tube of blue colored linseed oil with a thumb size
Of stringy, useless pigment. Same thing with another paint manf. located in N.J.

I’ve never had any trouble with Blockx or Old Holland brands.

Who do you order your paint from?
Do you order over the internet?
Can you recommend a company with a decent return policy?

I’m going to have to order that BGO over the internet….

Thanks again….art

Re: Oil Paint -- Chalky Skintones

Art -- Thanks for you comments, and for the confirmation of the color match to your samples.

Sorry about that Blockx Yellow Ochre you have. Something is wrong with yours -- I've had several and they all match what's shown here.

As you can see, that Gold Ochre is a low chroma orange (or Yellow Red), almost perfectly situated between Yellow Ochre and Light Red -- those three would make mixing skin colors quite easy.

I usually buy on line from ASW Express -- good discounts and they've been very good with my orders, including replaced defective merchandise when needed. I also buy on line from Italian Art Store -- smaller outfit with great people. Locally, I use Blick as my bricks and mortar store -- stretcher bars, paint and brushes as needed. When I buy pre-made canvas, I go to Utrecht in town.
