Perhaps you could use some darker values on the head of the hammer as it's blending in too much with the cloth. Other than that, wonderful painting!

You might glaze over the hammer head with some payne's gray and it might take more than one glaze but it should bring out the hammer head. Then you can find a carpenter to sell it to. Nice job.

Thank you Phil and Dana for taking time to help me. It seems to be unanimous here (and elsewhere) that the hammerhead is too light in value. Lesson learned.

Re: Stanley with Red Pencil (Structured Critique)

a very VERY complicated and ambitious still life! i like some of the wood grains and the shapes are pretty recognizable. one suggestion would be to do some studies before beginning such a challenging work: one for the white sheet ( to explore the wrinkles and how they work - a section of, say, with some reflections in the white from a few tools. next would be a study of one of the shiny metal objects (near some others to see who it will play)..

finally one of the (other) most difficult things is the drawing that is the basis for the painting - chiefly it's the perspective of each object that is most problematic.. ( and very painstaking to get right).. ok those are some thoughts.. i hope you find some of that useful - and - thank you for posting this fine work!

Re: Stanley with Red Pencil (Structured Critique)

Thank you for investing time to comment, Kevin. I appreciate it. If you make it back this way...

I agree the folds of the nail apron could be improved. A study would have helped, as this is the first cloth I've attempted. There are problems, I think, with edges, color temperature, texture, and perspective there.

Are you seeing other particular problems with perspective? I know there is an error in the back half of the level. If there are other errors in perspective, I would like to understand them.

Anyone?
