| I was pleasantly surprised when I knocked off an 18 x 24 painting in about 45 minutes painting time .. took an hour but I squeezed out and mixed my paints with black oil which took the better part of 15 minutes. The reason it went so well was simple to me. I had done the study by just firing paint at the panel so I could get it done in less than ten minutes. Knowing what I could produce with such haste and remembering my color combinations, I was armed and dangerous. The pictures here don't do the painting a world of justice because it really sings 4 part harmony in real life but you get the idea and this article is about doing Pochades not making paintings. |

| Just think about it for a moment. One day you, I, or any artist, could be walking through the woods with a little Pochade Box hanging from our side. Wow, we see a moment; the burning bush! We quickly grab our stuff and set it down on the panel. Great! We now have the colorings that inspired us to stop and breathe in the scene. We then take our camera and gather some shots for detail. We all know where the color goes when we use a camera to record a scene. Correct, it goes nowhere, as the camera cannot gather the same information that is fed our senses. However, we have a little recording of what inspired us as we have it down on panel.
With our photos and the panel, we now have everything we need to go into the studio and create a version of the masterpiece that nature has revealed to us (just because we were there). Interesting thought, isn't it? I believe that when I can get these little studies down they will be of immense value to me as an artist. They will help in my observation powers, my decision making, and my color choices. I have discovered that more times than not, less is more. I find myself becoming less and less tense when standing before nature and trying to get down enough of what I see to display some of the beauty. I find my whole approach and application is changing for the better. I can't tell you that you will be a better artist because of the time you invest doing Pochades as only you can answer that question. I can tell you that in a matter of two weeks I am thoroughly impressed with doing them and will continue to do them on a regular basis. So, if you want to see if I'm full of it, or if they really do help you develop, it's a simple thing you must do. Get yourself some little panels and get busy because I for one think that you will be very pleasantly surprised by the rewards gained from such a simple exercise. |
