4. Assemble the hardware:

Affix the hinges on one side so top fits on bottom.

Then attach the locking clasp.

Screw in the handle, making sure it’s vertically and horizontally centered, so the weight is distributed equally.

Open the lid and lean it against a wall as far as you think it should go for your particular painting style. Mine is a little more than 90 degrees. Then attach the chain to hold it in that position.
5. Assemble the Canvas Holder:

Glue the 2 pieces of hardwood to both long sides of the lid, as shown below. They are necessary to withstand the ups and downs of the long bolts.

Drill 2 holes by the edges of the 3rd piece of hardwood and glue the ends of the bolts in it. Drill 2 holes thru the top-facing long side of the lid, corresponding exactly to the position of the glued bolts. Make these 2 holes about 1/8” (3mm) bigger than necessary (I first had them exactly the size of the bolts, and it was a real pain to adjust the bolts, because you will NEVER get it exact. I then drilled the holes bigger, and now the bolts slide easily up and down).

Insert the nuts, then their washers onto the bolts. Insert the piece of wood with the bolts from the inside of the lid, so the ends of the bolts stick out on the side where your handle is. Then screw in the washers and the wing nuts. Your canvas panel will go on top of the bottom piece of hardwood (you can cut a small groove to hold panels), and the top piece can be lifted up and down to clamp down on the canvas to hold it in place.
Below is how it looks with a small canvas inserted inside. The bolts stick out, but not as far as on a larger panel. The nice thing about this is, that when you paint in oils, you can slightly loosen the clamp, turn your canvas around, so it faces the inside of the lid, and clamp it down again. That way it can dry without anything touching it, while you carry the whole box home.

Also, while painting, you can hang a plastic bag for your garbage on the bolts sticking out.

The bolts will stick out quite far when a canvas is in place. If it’s too uncomfortable to carry it like that, take the canvas out, and push the top piece with the bolts all the way down and clamp it down. In that position my bolts only stick out less than an inch (about 2cm).
6. Put the canvas in place:

Push the top piece up thru the holes, and insert canvas. Push the piece down, and screw the nuts to the top of the lid, then screw the wing nuts from the other side to hold it all in place.

Congratulations! You are now ready to fill your box with your supplies for a wonderful day out!
