![]() | This is the final picture, I have added some small details like the hole in the ear, the shadow in the middle of the tongue and I also added some texture on the nose.
I then added a final glaze to the nose to blend in the texture a bit. This painting utilizes the dry brush technique rather than using a lot of glazes and washes in order that the colours remain bold and are not muted. | James Bitzel was born in Wabash Indiana, the home of Mark Honeywell and the first electrically lighted city in the world. My brother and I were raised by our mother with the help of her parents. We were typical kids shooting pellet guns and fishing for chubs and the occasional crawdad in the creek by our house. When I devoted most of my teenage years to baseball cards and baseball TV, he and I drifted apart. I took Art as my first elective in high school. I never though I had any particular talent but I was good at shading and evaluating light values, at least good enough to have the highest score in my class. Later in high school I dropped Art to take classes I though would be more important to my future in the Midwest, Welding and Drafting both of which I got nominated outstanding student of the year. In Drafting I actually won the award, too bad my teacher never told me when the award ceremony was. In my senior year I was contacted by a Marine Corps recruiter who convinced me to join, because I knew that I would never be able to work full time, go to college, and pay the bills. I served four years as a combat photographer but the most important thing I got from my experience was my wife. She was from Florida so we had to move, how terrible move to Florida could you imagine? So six years out of high school here I am married with a beautiful son and I decided to pick up painting to paint a stepping stool for my son, a legacy. Then it got out of hand and I haven’t stopped painting since. | |
