"Create Portraits With The Airbrush!"

On the right, is the mask that will cover the badge.
I probably will not need the negative mask but will keep it just in case.
I wrote "DEPUTY" on the mask BEFORE cutting it.
This will keep the orientation correct when placing it on the painting.
I cut a hole in the middle so I can tape it to the painting using painter's tape.
When I placed it on the painting I realized the ends were too flimsy.
I added some more tape underneath to secure the tips.

I am ready to apply ComArt’s 60% gray and paint his jacket. This alone should make the painting come alive. All but the lettering on the badge will be done.

The Jacket

Using 60% gray I sprayed very close to the piece and outlined the jacket area.
Spraying close allowed me to get a dark edge without much overspray.
Next, I filled in a few shadows around the inner shirt and neck to darken them.

I removed the mask. The white area, where the tape was, will get painted over then I'll use an eraser to blend it.

I noticed the lower part of the bandana didn’t stand out enough from the shirt.
By adding some dark to the right of the bandana it seemed to cast a stronger and larger shadow, giving it more depth.

Stepping back, I could see I needed to erase some of the overspray from the shirt where the 60% gray had darkened it too much.
I also noticed I had painted over his right ear a tad.

I darkened the jacket, hat, background, and a few other shadow areas under the bandana.

Next, is another phase of erasing to brighten a few spots where overspray happened.
