I erased in a few more highlights and (with the pencil eraser) added texture to the skin.

I am now ready to go to Com-Art’s 60% gray.
This should really bring out the contrast in the face.
I will also be laying in the hat and jacket with this "value".
Then I will add black in the darkest spots and erase more highlights.

Even with the extra darkness, the mid-tones in the face, are still not rich enough.
I added a touch more dark to his face and hair, then rendered the shape of his teeth, using a pencil.
Creating The Mask

To achieve a clean, straight edge around the badge, I created a mask.
I took the masking film (in this case I used tracing paper) and traced the outline of the badge from my illustration board.
Then I took an x-acto knife and cut along the lines.
