I use a pencil eraser to swirl some texture into the skin. Tiny circular motions create a texture similar to pores. If it looks too light (as if you are erasing too much) then you are probably close to being correct. As you add darker paint, the texture will become more muted.


I added two dark squares to the bandana.
They seem too dark now, but I will wait and see how they look later after more dark is added.

Here is a shot of the piece after adding the highlights.

Background

I painted the background freehand with 20% gray.
By painting freehand, the background and foreground blend together without any risk of a hard or white edge from a mask.
The first layer of background took about 30 minutes.

Now, I am ready to begin the next layer (40% gray).
I sprayed the 40% gray in places that needed to be darker.
Even after being selective in the darkening, I had to go back and re-erase some highlights to get them white again.

Here is the piece after some 40% gray has been applied.
