| Here is the erased sketch.
The lines are about the right darkness, and could be even lighter. I intend to use them as a guide to airbrush the wrinkles and landmarks. After that, I will no longer need them so they can be extremely light and still do the job. It’s better if they are almost too light because erasing them after painting is nearly impossible. | ![]() |
| Painting
I will paint the background, along with the foreground, as I work from light to dark. Using ComArt’s 20% gray, I lay in the basic shapes, do SOME shaping and detail work, then move to 40% gray. If something is very dark, I wait until I get to that gray level to paint it. Once I lay in the boundaries, I do some shading like the shadow on his nose. This photo shows how much I paint in about 10 minutes and how odd it looks at first. | ![]() |
| Eyes
I paint the iris before painting the eyelids, using a circle template. Next, I erase the overspray on the eyelids. My next pass of paint (without the circle template) will give the edge a bit of softness. | ![]() |
| Below, I am erasing some overspray from the eye and shirt.
