"The Traveling Oil Painter"

Linda worked in acrylic with a limited palette and oils. I worked in oil and also drew with conte’ onto my canvases and panels. In some situations, such as at the market, in cathedrals and at museums, it was impossible to set up and paint. Having panels to draw on with conte was unobtrusive. Plus toward the end of the trip, as time ran out on drying time, it was good to have a method to keep working up to the last day. My last day in Paris , I drew onto canvas with conte’ and then painted once I had returned home and stretched the canvas
On returning home, it was fairly easy to position and stretch canvases. Edges were altered, bigger by about ¼” due to the stretch. I would also recommend not painting too thickly at edges, I found thick paint crackled a bit at the edge of the stretcher. However, under the circumstances, using a suitcase, everything worked well. A lot of the drying issues could be avoided if a person could just stay for several months, not always a practical solution, but a good idea. In conclusion the more you plan to move around, the less stuff I would bring, for example sketchbook and camera only. If you could stay in one spot, and set up a minimal studio, I would bring my favorite surfaces, ready to go and plan to purchase supplies there. Now I have some wonderful souvenirs of transparent old Holland colors, as well as my French paintings to remember a great experience.
If you have some good tips to share about your traveling with paint, please let me know, and I will add to the planning of the next French painting trip.
