"Morrison Cliffs" oil on linen, 9"x12"
The Morrison Cliffs are composed primarily of shales (mudstones) that are red and green in color. The shales are so soft that they weather into beautiful rounded cliffs that I find irresistible to paint. I painted a 9” x 12” color study that I’ll be using for a much larger painting.
Saturday was our last day in Moab – we’d be leaving early Sunday morning so I wanted to make the most out of the day I had left. I spent the day in the immediate vicinity of the house, while Tom and his brother-in-law drove to the east of Moab for another strenuous day of biking. In the morning, I did another color study of the Morrison Cliffs to the north, trying to capture the viridian-colored cliffs and their electric blue shadows. Painting here definitely gets you into using strong colors!
In the late morning, I did a small painting of the cliffs to the west of the rental. The shadows were tough to capture because they were a dusky purple with lots of reflected light, and the highlights on the cliffs were a brilliant yellow. That afternoon, Jake and I again ventured into the desert to the east of the house to paint the La Sal mountains with their fresh blanket of snow. Tom came back from his ride and joined us on our outing. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance to complete the foreground in this painting because the sun dipped behind the cliffs earlier than I expected it would. But as the sun set behind the cliffs, I saw the La Sals turn a pretty, soft yellow and the middle ground sagebrush turn a brilliant orange.
