"Plein Aire Trip Report: Moab, Utah"

Moab, Utah, is a premiere spot for mountain biking and 4WD adventures. But its stunning red rock canyons, deserts, and rock formations make it an excellent place for plein aire painting as well. During Thanksgiving week of 2003 (the last week of November), I traveled to Moab with my boyfriend, Tom, our dog Jake, and Tom’s parents, sister, and her family for a mini vacation. They all went to Moab to mountain bike…I tagged along to paint and did a little mountain biking when I had time.
Moab’s scenery is stunning and access is relatively easy. Moab is located in east-central Utah in the heart of the Colorado Plateau. The surrounding area has everything from high alpine in the La Sal mountains, to the red rock canyons of Canyonlands National Park, to the rock arches of Arches National Park, to rivers (the Colorado and Green Rivers), and high desert and canyons north of town. There isn’t much vegetation to get in the way of the scenery, so this can make it either very challenging or a delight to paint, depending on your outlook. I love painting rocks and canyons, so the lack of vegetation is a plus!

Tom’s family rented a vacation home about 9 miles north of Moab in an area of high deserts and canyons. The views from this home are incredible…Arches National Park to the south and east, the La Sal mountains further to the south, the Morrison cliffs to the north, and red rock canyons to the west. I really didn’t need to venture too far from the house to find excellent subjects for my paintings.
