"Border Collie In Mixed Media"

Author: Toni-Marie_Hudson, Contributing Editor

Here, I have developed the shading on her chest, painting in the general shapes of the clumps of hair and the shadows and highlights. Not so much in detail yet, I'll add that later.

Where a highlighted clump of hair overlaps a shadowed area, I use a lighter tone on the ends of the overlapping hair to bring it forward of the shadow that it is in front of.
And finally.. here is the completed painting.
As you can see, the detail on the chest has been put in and I have also sorted her right side near the bottom of her chest where the white meets the brown tones putting in the stray pale hairs, etc. I painted in darker spaces between the hairs in the shadows on the chest (negative painting) and painted in the pale hairs directly coming from the ends of the tufts, etc.
I also sorted out the edge of the shadow on her left side which was too straight before and made it more undefined which makes it look less distracting and more genuine.

I hope this article has been of help to anyone wishing to paint animals or those who'd like to try mixed media to find how mediums can work together.
