| Stage 4 Here, I have just done a few touch ups, gone over the catchlight again with white acrylic, a bit more on the schlera (White part of the eye) on the inner corner, and just added in other fine details with coloured pencil, WCP and acrylic depending on what was needed. |
| After completing work on both eyes, I move on to the nose. |
| Nose - Stage 1
Basically, stage one is the same as with the eyes, just laying the foundation by shading using a black coloured pencil. When I start using other mediums, I'm more familiar with the shadowed and highlighted areas without looking backwards and forwards at the reference pic and also to help prevent me from putting a blob of black or white acrylic slightly out of place. It also helps with the overall depth after other layers have been added. Once it looks like this, I can start adding contrast in the way of darkening the darks using black ink. I just dab dots of it or draw in a small blob of it in an appropriate place then blend it out quickly, using a black coloured pencil, before it dries. It stays wet for longer and is easier to blend outwards if put over coloured pencil so that is another advantage of the coloured pencil layer first. Stage 2 Here I have done as I said above where I added black ink in small amounts and blended it using a black coloured pencil. This gave the nose more contrast. Stage 3 After stage 2, I went over the whole thing lightly with a brown watercolour pencil and a white coloured pencil to help blend the colours together and smooth the whole thing out. Then came the acrylic. Mist has a black nose but because of the evening light, it looks brownish in the photo so I used shades of brown acrylic to give the nose more colour. After the brown, I went a little darker, adding more black and using a fine brush to paint in the darker areas, not solidly, but more in tiny patterns to give the impression of those nobbly bits you get on dogs' noses. I have started with the highlights, too, just adding tiny blobs of white acrylic with a pale brownish tinge. |
| Here is the full painting with eyes and nose completed. I have also done a small amount round the mouth area but nothing considerable. |
