"Border Collie In Mixed Media"

Once the outline is on the final piece in very faint pencil, I tape the paper to my drawing board and put masking tape all around the edge of where the painting will be to keep the edge sharp. Once the painting is done, I will remove this tape and it leaves lovely sharp straight edges. You can see the tape in the photo.

As for the painting itself, the background comes first. I used acrylic and watercolour pencil to create the grass in the background which is meant to be out of focus. In doing this, it is important to not paint actual blades of grass but just the impression of blurred grass.
Next comes the eyes. I have done a step-by-step illustration to show how I get the wet, glassy look. Each eye took close to 2 hours; they had to be perfect.

Stage 1 All I have done here is use coloured pencil to draw in the black areas and the brown iris. I left the highlighted bits.
Stage 2 Using black ink, I made the blacks more black and the outer edge of the iris darker by using dark brown ink. I then smudged it into place with a brown coloured pencil with a fairly sharp but slightly rounded tip. I had also added a bit of brown watercolour pencil to the iris and watered it down and the milky part of the reflection at the top. I added a little black watercolour pencil near the upper lid then moistened it, blending it down with some white acrylic on the brush to blend. This helped to produce the milky affect.
Stage 3 Here, I have added white acrylic to the sharp catchlight and have added acrylic to the iris to make the colour richer. I have also started to put in the lighter bits showing on parts of the iris using a yellow ochre watercolour pencil and acrylic, one on the outer corner and one on the inner corner against the dark edge and there is also a slight one going right down the middle of the iris. I also developed the milky effect on the reflection at the top.
