Title: Untitled

Info: 16x18 inches made with Liquitex, Golden tube acrylic, Golden soft gel medium and water on stretched canvas

When I painted the sunflower, I had been playing with color mixing and decided I wanted to use complementary colors. The background and reflected light on the leaves are done in shades of blue and lavender, while the sunflower is done in the traditional yellows. The results surprised me and I haven’t decided if I like it or not. (Maybe a good title would have been Blue Velvet. The colors always make me think of an Elvis on velvet painting.)

I have no formal art training and consider WetCanvas! my greatest art resource. I found the site by chance and have been addicted ever since. I have learned new techniques, rules of composition, color theory and tried many things I would have never dreamed of on my own. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the other members who graciously mentor, encourage beginners and share their knowledge as well as their art.

Title: "Evening Supper"

Info: 10X12 inches made with Liquitex tubes and Golden Glazing Medium on 600gms hot pressed watercolor paper

A gregarious Rainbow Lorikeet feeding on a Brush Box gum tree. The goal of this piece was to define the bird and the plant through the use of different textures and colours. Therefore the leaves were glazed smooth and the flowers and the bird had more texture to them.

WetCanvas! has certainly helped me grow as an artist. The wealth of information and help that is available here is phenomenal. I wouldn't be as far along the road of art without it, as essentially, I am self taught. It is nice to have a sounding board for a piece and a room full of critics (positive and negative) to lend support to your efforts.

Title: "Ormond Beach"

Info: 12x16 inches made with Golden Heavy Bodied Acrylics on stretched canvas

I was painting on The Loop Road which flows through the Halifax River and marsh wetlands. I start with shapes and masses, developing light source and values, and ending with detail work. I try to retain the freshness that is so conducive to plein air painting.

Title: "Fruits"

Info: 21x21 cm made with Pebeo acrylics (black, white & naples yellow) on Canson 300 grm watercolour paper

In this painting I wanted to "view" a classic style life in a different way. So I really cropped the subject and focused on the details of each rounded form. I basically worked with black and white and just added one color, naples yellow. I wanted to give the sense of color.

WC! is very important to me because I can communicate with a lot of artists - exchange ideas, learn new things and always stay motivated. The Acrylic Forum has helped me try new techniques and also "fall in love" with this medium that I hated before! (Don't ask me, I don't know why...)

Thank you for everything!

Title: "Granny's Group"

Info: 8x10 inches made with Golden, Tri-Art and Golden Acrylic Glazing Liquid on Stretched Canvas

For this painting, I started with a complete grisaille (shades of gray) underpainting. It was quite detailed and could have been a finished work in itself. When the grisaille was finished, I began glazing color on top. At first, it looked much like a poorly tinted black and white photo. However, the grisaille only acts as a map and eventually it is totally covered so it doesn't show through. Using glazing liquid, I could control the transparency of the paint more easily and extend the drying time. Adding further layers, the painting started to come into focus and I finished off by adding the highlights and the darkest darks. My favorite part of this painting is the swirling fabric. It was inspired by a painting I had purchased by J. Faunce called "Mixed Bag #2".

WetCanvas! has played a significant role in my artistic development over the past year. With all the wonderful and generous artists here, it has taken the place of the formal art education that I never had. I'm currently painting still lifes in acrylics and oils. The Acrylic Forum on WetCanvas! has helped me tremendously in my goal of mastering the medium. Critiques and valuable insight from my peers have pushed me in the right direction. I have a long way to go yet, and the Acrylic Forum will continue to be part of my journey.
