"How To Create a Mini Plein Air Box"

Author: Lorelou, Contributing Editor

I wanted to have small Plein Air Box that would be extremely easy to carry around, that was lightweight, unobtrusive, could fit in a large purse or small tote bag and could be left in my vechicle at all times.
This is a 8x6 cigar box that I purchased on E-bay.
Cigar boxes come in many sizes. Choose the size that fits your purposes.

The hardware (hinges and latch) may need to be changed on your box. If it seems to be on well just leave it as is. My hardware has never loosened and is in good shape.
T-nut added for use with a tripod.
(If you don't want to use a tripod skip this step)

At the bottom of the box, find the center and mark it with a pencil point or small nail. Make a hole with a drill bit, the size of your t-nut. Do not use a bit that is larger, make sure that is is the correct size. If you are not sure, use the smaller bit first.

Insert the t-nut into the drilled hole on the inside of the box. Pound it in with a hammer. You will find that the t-nut tends to back out of the wood, so squeeze glue underneath the t-nut and attach the box to a tripod. This will hold the t-nut in while the glue drys over night. You may also varnish over the t-nut for extra holding power in case the glue gets weak. Just don't get any varnish inside the threads.

Dowels will be used to support a palette and to keep it in place during transport.

Round or square dowels can be used. Measure and cut dowels making an allowance for the thickness of the palette between the four corner dowels top and bottom.

Apply glue to the bottom and the sides of only the eight corner dowels. Four on the cover and four on the bottom of the box. Let dry overnight.
If you are right handed glue two extra dowels on the left side next to the corner dowels with the L bracket between the two, to make sure the spacing is right. If you are left handed glue them on the right side.

For the next step remove the bracket carefully making sure the dowels do not move. Let it dry in place over night.

These dowels will hold the L brackets in place.

You may drill extra holes in the L brackets for brushes. Some brushes may require that you drill the existing holes larger.

The second L bracket will hold a turp cup. You will want to drill a hole between a double turp cup. Slide it over the L bracket and insert a removable bolt through the bracket and cup bracket. This will keep the turp cup from sliding off.
