"Plein Aire Packing for Beginners"

Here is a shot of my final load. The only thing that is not pictured is my hiking stick, which I fashioned from an old broom handle.

  • My easel, complete with paints and brushes, and 2 12x16 panels ready to go, stool across the top of the pack
  • My lumbar pack, with my camera, keys, water bottles, chapstick, binoculars, wallet, etc.
  • My auxiliary pack, which has 10 panels, 3 canvases, 2 rolls of paper towels, wet knaps, brush cleaner, bug repellent, multi tool, poncho, 8 different jars (thinner, mediums, some empty), small funnel, ballpoint pen, paper palettes, masking tape, etc.
In addition to the items shown above, you may want to consider bringing some "survival" gear. Some suggestions:

  • Food! Things that can be packed easily are the best. I recommend energy bars, Pop-Tarts (yum!), or granola bars.
  • A hat! Protect yourself from the sun and rain. Remember, you will be outdoors most of the day, so play it safe.
  • Extra socks, tee-shirt, etc. If there is even a hint of rain in the forecast, do yourself a favor and throw some extra socks in your pack. You’ll thank me for it later. Being caught in the rain is only a problem if you allow yourself to be caught by surprise, without dry clothes.

Of course, if you are doing a hardcore trip, with several days of hiking, you’ll probably bring some other items. But I hope this gives beginners out there a good start in their packing endeavors. Happy painting!
