"Plein Aire Report: Lake Keowee, SC"

Author: Scott_Burkett, Contributing Editor

Aha! This spot has some character. There were several small falls/rapids up ahead, and some interesting foliage all around us.
We quickly set up camp on the rocks in the middle of the creek!

TIP: One of our easels had one leg submersed under the water. Not good. The wood absorbed the moisture, and was a bear to fold up. I may try sealing the legs with water sealant, to see if that helps in future situations like this.
Scott decides to experiment by doing a quick value wash in burnt sienna! Oh boy …

It sounded good in theory, at least. I wanted to have an interesting color working as an undertone.
Pictured to the right is Tom, hard at work blocking in the major masses.

Tom is currently exploring the benefits (and drawbacks) of using painting knives rather than brushes. He worked almost solely with the knife on this trip.
Here is a progress shot showing Scott's piece. The background foliage and rocks have been scrubbed in.
