![]() | Here, I've pulled in a bit of the mountain color for the background hills. Notice a few small streaks of the sky color pulled down into the hills – nice atmospheric perspective affect.
It serves to break the hard lines down into something a bit softer. In retrospect, it could probably use a bit more - to really push it into the background. |
![]() | Here we go, slapping the red in. This is just a quick study, and certainly not indicative of a studio work, so I’m just pulling color here and there. |
![]() | Here it is, the finished painting, as it appears outdoors in natural light.
You can see a few white highlights in the background for distant buildings, and lots of sgrafitto (scratching) using my knife blade in the foreground . This creates a nice foliage effect! |

| ABOVE: Detail showing the sky, background hills and foreground tree. Of particular interest to me is the nice harmony between the green and red. Also, take note how the knife was used to flick and pull tree color into the sky. The painting knife is an amazing tool, often more flexible than the brush! |

| One more detail shot– again showing how I use the tip of my knife to "pull" or "flick" color from the tree into the sky for what I think makes a nice effect!
