"The Living Desert-En Plein Air"

Author: Lei_Iverson, Contributing Editor

Next I block in the large masses. Starting with the trees I group them together as a mass of green. The next areas to block in with color are the pottery and the wall. Even the shadow shapes become an abstract shape of value and hue. Everything is still loose at this point, but the painting is taking on more structure.
After the canvas is covered by the large masses, I concentrate with the value and color relationships of specific forms. It's at this point that objects in the painting are transformed from loose shapes to more detailed forms of light and dark, warm and cool. Attention, to lost and found areas, keep objects unified with the rest of the painting.
With a few carefully placed highlights and accent strokes to the blocks of color layed down in the beginning the painting was done.

The two hours were filled with an abundance of creative energy for me. I sincerely hope the onlookers enjoyed the demonstration, and felt the joy I experienced in creating the painting. All of us had shared the same moment of life, and experienced the inspirational power of 'The Living Desert.'
These close-ups show how I painted the pot and trees that were briefly indicated in the initial layout I did for the painting. Notice all the edges, values, and the temperature changes in both segments of the painting. All these elements work together to describe the objects, and are related to the others.
