Author: Phyllis_Franklin, Contributing Editor

Now she spends hours every day filling blank pages with watercolour or knife oil on canvas. Her favourite subject is flowers, with peonies, roses and iris blooms topping the list. The more intricate Chinese painting pieces she used to create are now beyond her capabilities.

"In the beginning I could do it, but now I can't do it because my hands and eyes are getting worse," said Mak, who has created nearly 300 artworks.

Stress is a trigger for the disease and painting for hours has become a relaxing therapy for Mak, who was born in China and arrived in Canada in 1972.

She has several brushes on hand at every session for she often drops one and has difficulty bending down to retrieve it. An unsteady hand has ruined many efforts.

Mak often posts images of her finished works on the Internet and encourages feedback. It's her way of maintaining contact with others during the day.

"I can't say how long I can still paint, but I'll keep doing it as much as possible."
