EDMONTON-- Rosanna Mak's trembling hands steady when she's painting, letting her forget for a while that she has Parkinson's disease.

"I find it calms down. I sit down and do the painting and I concentrate on it and it relieves the symptoms," said the 58-year-old Edmonton woman who was diagnosed with the progressive degenerative neurological disease in 1986.

"I feel I can forget my Parkinson's and I feel happy.

"If it doesn't work, I still keep painting," said Mak, who is showcasing several of her works at an exhibition in the Penny McKee library, in Abbottsfield Shoppers Mall, 3210 118 Ave. until Nov. 30.

Mak endures Parkinson's common symptoms of shaking, slow movement, slurred speech and needing a cane or walker to get about.

Society has a better understanding of Parkinson's, thanks to awareness efforts by several high-profile sufferers like Canadian actor Michael J. Fox. Other famous people with the disease include Muhammad Ali, the late Pierre Trudeau and evangelist Billy Graham. The Pope is also believed to have Parkinson's.

But Mak knows her condition means she doesn't fit most people's image of an accomplished painter. Her works, which command as much as $800, become even more impressive when one learns she didn't wield a brush until after she was diagnosed with the disease.

An artist friend, Tat Ming Yee, offered to teach her the craft in 1997. It took a few months to realize health benefits and to even feel like she could paint.

"I'd painted in elementary school. I wasn't very interested and I wasn't very good," recalled the married mom of an adult son. "There's a potential for everyone to paint. I heard that. You have to develop it."
