| The settlers found there were many layers to the island. You had salt marshes everywhere, the oaks, the pines, the scrub oaks all embraced by gently flowing tidal creeks heavy with all sorts of insects and sea creatures. The tidal creeks proved to be very tricky to navigate for you had to go out and come back in at high tide. Back then they had no paperback guides or weather men to tell them when to expect the the ebb and flow of tides. They did not avoid the marshes, however, because they were a prime source of seafood and where shrimp came to grow until they reached adulthood and returned to the ocean to spawn and complete the cycle. | ![]() |
| There are only a few trees on the island that are more than 100 years old. Most of them have been cut down for timber. This tree is about 25 years old but you can tell that it is beginning to have the arthritic limbs so charteristic of the live oaks that florish on the island. The closer the oaks are to the ocean, the more they bend. | ![]() |
| Thinking about having this art conference was like a dream, something you knew was possible but you just weren't sure that it could be pulled off and be as exciting in real life. That's how the Southern Ladies Art Conference was created. Yes, it was a dream. A dream art conference on a dream island. Now I was sure it couldn't get any better than that!

| In the end, there were eight of us and many more that had to send regrets or just could not make the time frame. I hadn't a clue on how to organize the event, but I am a great organizer of other things, so I took on the task with determination.
I remembered how great the getaway was at Amelia Island and several other WC! getaways, so I began to think what it was that we all needed from a conference and what would make it enjoyable. Thankfully, it was Paintfool, Cheryl Ritter, that finally named our group Southern Ladies Art Conference (SLAC) because, as it turned out, all of the ladies were from the South and we were there for a conference. Carly gave us our theme song, and sang it every chance she got, changing the words to fit the moment. |
