Painting a Dolphin

Lesson #3

Dry Brush Scumbling

After you have practiced your blending techniques, it is time to learn another method of applying paint. This is very simple and easy to learn. It is a process of dry brush painting over another color. You use a dry brush to spread the paint. This allows you to create a translucent view using an opaque color. Example: (The back of the dolphin.) You want to paint over this with a lighter color. So you place a small amount of paint over the back of the dolphin.

Then you take your dry brush and blend, but you take it farther than just blending. You brush the paint until it becomes dry. This allows you to cover an area and still look transparent. You have moved the paint over the surface of the canvas in a manner that keeps some of the colors beneath showing through. This is also used on large areas. You do the same scumbling, only with a larger brush. It is almost like scrubbing the paint on. I sometimes take either an old short bristled brush or a new brush that I have cut short to give it more of a scrubbing ability. Practice this on any area of your first practice painting.

Let's move on to lesson #4, acrylic blending!
